About Carl Mayotte

Carl Mayotte is one of the leading figures in contemporary jazz fusion in Québec. A bassist, composer, arranger, and educator, he stands out for his dazzling virtuosity, impeccable rhythmic precision, and signature sense of groove.

Winner of the Félix Award for Jazz Album of the Year at ADISQ in 2022 and Radio-Canada Jazz Revelation 2020–2021, his musical approach combines technical mastery with expressiveness, captivating both seasoned jazz fans and newcomers alike. A graduate of McGill University with a Master’s degree in Jazz Performance, he blends discipline with stage energy, creating a powerful musical universe that draws on modern jazz, progressive rock, funk, and Latin influences.

At the helm of his own ensemble, the Carl Mayotte Quintet, Carl Mayotte presents bold compositions driven by rich harmonies and complex rhythms. At every concert, the bassist is fueled by a deep desire to connect with the audience and offer a truly unique experience. He is joined by four outstanding musicians: Stéphane Chamberland on drums, Gabriel Cyr on guitar, Francis Grégoire on keyboards, and Damien-Jade Cyr on saxophones.

Since the release of Carnaval in the fall of 2023—an album awarded at the GAMIQ and nominated at both the Opus Awards and ADISQ—Carl Mayotte has continued to solidify his presence on the national and international stage.

Committed to making jazz more accessible and bringing it to the forefront, he published The Ultimate Jazz Fusion Play-Along for Bass with Hudson Music in 2023, a work that has become a reference for advanced bassists.

In March 2026, he released his fifth album, Claude, a tribute to the memory of his father.

“ With a groove that has no limits, the creativity of the compositions will surprise you. ”

“ (…) the young sensation of the Quebec jazz scene brings his musical universe to new boundaries, showing that jazz is more than ever alive.”

Bass Magazine

“ A truly beautiful album. The compositions are inspiring, and the arrangements—sometimes sophisticated, sometimes simpler—are always effective. A very well-produced record. Carl is an excellent bassist, and he always leaves space for the musicians accompanying him on the album. This serves his music well and reflects remarkable maturity. Bravo!
